Rain and Dust at North American Water Plants: Selecting IP67/IP68 Electric Actuators

Electric valve actuators at North American water plants, wastewater facilities and outdoor pumping stations may encounter rain, dust, standing water and daily temperature changes. Moisture or contaminants entering the terminal compartment can affect connections, limit switches and control electronics.

Outdoor valve automation therefore requires more than adequate torque. Engineers should specify enclosure protection, cable sealing, ambient temperature and condensation control. IP67 and IP68 configurations provide selection criteria, but installed protection also depends on the actuator configuration and field installation.

Select Protection for the Actual Exposure

Define the Water-Ingress Risk

Exposed piping, rooftop equipment, valve chambers and pumping stations have different environmental conditions. Review rainfall exposure, cleaning methods, potential water accumulation and possible immersion before choosing the enclosure rating.

The DCL weatherproof literature lists IP67 as standard on the main models, with IP68 optional. Procurement documents should identify the required configuration rather than requesting only a “waterproof electric actuator.” IP68 delivery should not be assumed across every model.

Confirm Immersion Conditions Separately

An IP68 marking alone does not state the permitted immersion depth or duration. The DCL literature does not provide complete immersion conditions. Where a valve chamber may remain flooded, obtain manufacturer confirmation covering water depth, exposure time, cable entries and installation orientation.

Model-specific information also matters. The DCL-02 specification table lists IP67, so the general range statement about optional IP68 should not automatically be applied to that model.

Check More Than the Enclosure Rating

Cable Entries and Cover Seals

Correct installation is necessary to preserve enclosure protection. An incorrectly sized cable gland, damaged seal or improperly secured cover can create an entry path for water.

The main DCL weatherproof models use two G1/2 weatherproof cable connectors for separate power and signal cables. Installers should match connectors to the actual cable dimensions and provide sufficient access for wiring, inspection and maintenance.

Temperature and Internal Condensation

The DCL weatherproof range lists an ambient-temperature range of -25°C to +55°C. Consider winter conditions, solar heating and heat from nearby equipment when assessing the actuator location.

Condensation can develop from humid internal air even without direct water ingress. Selected models can use an optional PTC anti-condensation heater for humid pumping stations or sites with substantial temperature variation. This feature should be specified when ordering.

Match the Actuator to the Valve and Control Task

Use Actual Valve Torque

Suspended solids, seat design, differential pressure and long idle periods can affect ball and butterfly valve torque. Valve-size tables are preliminary references; final sizing should use torque data supplied by the valve manufacturer for the operating conditions.

DCL documentation recommends an actuator-output-to-valve-test-torque ratio of approximately 1.1 to 1.3. This is a sizing reference, not a substitute for calculation or a universal torque-protection setting.

Select the Required Feedback

Isolation valves generally use on-off control. Flow, level or pressure regulation may require a modulating actuator with continuous position feedback.

DCL modulating versions accept 4–20 mA, 1–5 VDC or 2–10 VDC input and provide 4–20 mA output. The literature specifies basic error of no more than ±1%, repeatability error of no more than 1% and an adjustable deadband of 0.5%–5.0%. These describe actuator positioning rather than complete process-control accuracy.

DCL Weatherproof Electric Actuator Options

Models from DCL-02 to DCL-300 cover standard output torque from 16 to 3000 Nm for ball valves, butterfly valves and other quarter-turn equipment. ISO 5211 direct-mount interfaces are available, with flange size, drive square and stem height checked by model.

Configuration-dependent options include on-off control, feedback, modulation, Modbus communication, over-torque protection, anti-condensation heating and fail-safe return. Outdoor water-treatment specifications should connect these options with the required IP rating, temperature range, valve torque, cable sealing and maintenance access.
